MEATBALLS

In the Basilica Cistern,
under the streets of Istanbul
I could hear the Americans.
Emily whispered to me
about something
confidential.
The Turks’ voices were spirited,
too fast
for me to catch anything.
Still, I listened
to my son-in-law’s
friends and their food
favorites. On this trip
we ate at restaurants
with the best meatballs
in the city
and me a vegetarian.
I greeted store owners
in limp Turkish
except when I forgot
and reverted
to French,
which I don’t speak,
so I never knew
what I was saying.
We talked and drank
all night. I asked myself
How did I get here?
It was damp
and I heard the sloshing
water. A skinny cat
looked at me
with golden eyes.
She looked at me
from the damp crease
in the corner.
